High Cost of Reading

I have noticed that over the last 10 years the price of paperbacks have steadily risen. I have always been a big reader and I can remember at the age of 15 buying paperbacks that cost me either $2.99 for a small one or $5.99-$7.99 for a big one.

Now those small two dollar books are costing meĀ almost $5 for the same type of book with roughly the same amount of pages and the larger paperbacks are costing me almost $10. This is hard for someone who can read a book a day and I often find myself in the supermarket trying to decide on whether or not to get that book or get more food with the money. I love reading and it really is a tough decision on me.

I have wondered how long before the small novels are well over the $5 mark and the others over $10? I have never paid much attention to hardcovers beyond knowing that they are far more expensive, which is one reason I don’t own many of them.

One thing that has helped is, I have started doing more and more reading online with ebooks. Most of them are far cheaper, just as good and you aren’t left with hundreds of books all over your house. The drawback is not being able to move around with the book because it’s on your pc. The solution to that one is to get an ebook reader or use of another handheld device.

Still there are the more traditional books which have not made their way into ebook format as of yet and for those faithful readers, we will just have to keep shelling out dollars to try and keep up with rising prices of paperbacks.
