Building Spelling Skills for HomeSchoolers

I currently homeschool my 8 year old daughter. She is a year ahead and doing 3rd grade work. This year I decided to try Building Spelling Skills by Christian Liberty Press. I found the curriculum to be easy to follow, and the words to be a little bit challenging. That is exactly what my daughter needed.

The book is written out to give your child an assignment for each day. That is 5 days to go with a set of words. There are 20 words your children will learn how to spell each week. They all follow a pattern which is important for your children to be able to understand how to sound out words they don’t know. When my daughter was in a school earlier this year she was given 15 words to learn and they had nothing to do with each other. I found it much harder for her to learn that way than to add an extra 5 words that had a pattern.

The book follows this format:
Day 1: Finish the sentences with the list words. There are usually only 4 sentences. I go over the list words with my daughter just once.

Day 2: Study the word list. Understand the meaning of each word. We look them up in the dictionary. Then have the child write the list words 2x each. They can do it then or for homework.

Day 3: Write all your list words in the lines and circle the sound for that week (i.e. short o sound). There are usually 2 other short exercises to complete in the workbook for this day.

Day 4: Usually circle the word in the box that fits the meaning of the sentence given. A few short exercises on this day. Study all your words for a test tomorrow.

Day 5: Take a test in the back of the book. Make sure you pray before each test.

I can’t say how much I love this book enough. You will also fall in love with the price since you can get this book for $8.95. You will also not need any teacher’s manuals because it is all so self explanatory.

I give this course an A+!
