THE RUINS

This is a novel about two young couples on a vacation in Mexico. What started out as a relaxing vacation in Cancun ended in the wild interior of the Yucatan, far from the relaxing beaches of Cancun. The four friends Amy, Stacy, Jeff and Eric met 3 Greeks who didn’t speak any English or Spanish and Mathias a German. The journey begins when Mathias wanted to follow his brother who he came to Mexico with to the excavation sites in the jungles of Coba. His brother Henrich met and fell for a woman who was part of the excavation team.
They all decided to accompany Mathias because they thought it would be a great adventure before they headed back home to start their future after college. The 2 couples, Mathias and one of the Greeks who named himself Pablo went on their journey to Coba, heading for the archeological site where Mathias’ brother told him he would be. As soon as they found the site their journey to hell started. They were trapped on a hill that was literally alive. They endured days of torture, helpless and held captive by the vines and plants of the hill. Vines that seem to
mock their every move. Vines, plants and flowers that play mind games with them. The company keep hope alive but slowly give in to desparation day after day. It shows us how people react when they are put in a desparate situation, the strength of a persons character plays a big part in making decisions. But if mysterious vines play with your mind you’ll never know what kind of decisions you’ll make, especially if lives are at stake. I couldn’t put this book down, it’s a great read. It’s unbelievable that vines can bring horror but writer Scoot Smith did a good job convincing me. They already made a movie version of The Ruins but I haven’t seen it yet, I just hope it’s as good as the book.
