How to Read for Fun

Reading doesn’t have to feel like a chore–there are ways to make it fun and rewarding. It can be a great way to learn new things, improve your vocabulary and give you things to discuss with your friends and colleagues.

Step 1. Cut out small niches of time first. Use your breaks at work or school. Take a book or newspaper with you wherever you go. You may find that you have more time to read than you think–sitting in the dentist’s office, between classes or on your lunch hour. To read for fun, figure out how you can use your spare time. Get up earlier in the morning or take a book to bed with you.

Step 2. Get away from distractions. When you want to have a leisurely read, try to get away from noise and distracting people or places. There are coffee shops, libraries and bookstores that have comfy chairs to envelop you while you read.

Step 3. Read what you love. Pick books that interest you. If you are in the mood for a get away, read science fiction or a love story. When current events and politics interest you, there are many books and newspapers that will have plenty of words to keep you reading. Ask a librarian or search book sites for an interesting sub-genre. Ask friends and family who enjoy the same subject matter. Think about the things you enjoy doing, or things that you would simply like to know more about. To read for fun, the subject matter has to be fun for you.

Step 4. Make a space for reading. When you want to make space to read for fun, furnish a nice corner or room of your house specifically for reading. Get a comfy chair or love seat in a place with lots of light, or put a lamp nearby to help give you light.

Step 5. Get the family involved. Reading doesn’t have to be a solitary act. Get your kids or your partner involved by reading together. Reading aloud to your kids and sharing books with the people you love can bring you closer.
