The book “There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly” by Simms Taback is a wonderful book for children that should be added to every child’s collection. The book came from a folk tale from the 1940s and is very cute.
The lady swallows a fly, and then continues to swallow animals to catch the fly. Why she swallowed the fly no one knows why. In the end she swallows a horse and dies, of course.
The pictures in this book are fabulous. They are very colorful and each page has a die cut do you can see the woman’s animals in her stomach.
It is a great book to promote reading and has rhyming words as well. Children will be able to “read” it themselves after having someone read it to them only a few times. Children especially love this.
Plus if you say the first line, the children will often blurt out the next line, making it more fun.
