I’m currently reading this text for my Direct Social Work Practice II course in my Social Work Masters degree. Although a clinical concentration is not my desire, this class has proven quite interesting. We explore so many different types of counseling approaches that I never even knew existed! This book does a great job of laying out the descriptions of each approach in a very easy to understand manner. They give perfect examples of how to utilize this approach with clients as well.

At the end of each chaper you are prompted questions to ask yourself on how you’d apply the approach or how you feel about it from your own personal level. So the book connects to us as the counselor, not just as the student learning new tools.

We have learned so many techniques in this book from Psychoanalytic Therapy to Existentialism. Some approaches are similar while others are quite diverse. You can get a feel for what approach would work for you or a combination of several so that you can incorporate into your own practice.
