The Discovery of India is a monumental work by Jawaharlal Nehru, India’s first prime minister. The work is actually a series of elaborate and fairly well researched letters written by Nehru to his daughter Indira, the future Prime Minister. Nehru wrote the letters when he was in jail, during India’s freedom struggle against the British rule. The series of letters were later collected and published as two volumnious works – Glimpses of World History and Discover of India.
Discovery of india is one of the most resourceful and authoritative works on Indian history. Nehru’s lucid style and his vast knowledge about India and her history spanning over thousands of years makes this book one of the most interesting reads ever. The striking feature of the book is Nehru’s objectivity when dealing with the various episodes and periods of history, something that has not been met even by many professional historians.
Shyam Benegal, the noted film dircetor produced a television serial “Bharat ek Khoj” based on this novel, with each episode dealing with a chapter in this book.
