My Booky Wook: Russell Brand

Not for the faint hearted, this book, written by the British stand-up comedian and host of the MTV Video Music Awards Russell Brand, will test even fans of his unique style of explicit, irreverent, lude comedy. It chronicles his rise to fame through drug and sex addiction, and gives fans an insight into how his character developed.

The autobiography opens with Brand in a rehab clinic for sex addicts. The beginning introduces the rather disturbing themes of childhood and sex in how the first chapter moves so smoothly into the second, an explanation if his background and childhood in a broken home. Throughout the book the themes of sex and drug addiction develop, all in a way that fans will feel gives them a great insight into his rise through the ranks of some of the most celebrated TV presenters and comedians on this side of the Atlantic.

Fans will be tested by this book but most will come to the end of it appreciating the man and his comedy even more than they had done before. I do feel though, that for the so-called “haters” who read his autobiography, their feeling will only, at best, stay the same.
