Charles Dickens A Tale of Two cities is one of the most popular English novels and an all time classic. The two cities are London and Paris, before and after the Revolution.
The story is set in the background of the French Revolution and deals with personal loyalty, friendship and communion. Sydney Carton, a bright young man from Lodnon has seemingly wasted his life. He loves Lucie Manette, a young French woman. Lucie however marries his good friend Charles Darnay, who has an aristocratic background. When the revolutionaries are set to execute Lucie’s husband, Sydney sets himself up in exchange out of love for Lucie.
Dickens is at his best in this novel. The opening lines of the novel “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times” has been immortalized in English literature as one of the best opening quotes ever written. This book is a must read for those who love English Literature for its literary style alone.
