Archie Comics is the famous American comic book series, renowned for the fictional teenage Archie Andrews, Betty Cooper, Veronica Lodge, Reggie Mantle and Forsythe “Jughead” Jones set in the fictional American town of Riverdale. The characters were created by publisher and editor John L. Goldwater, written by Vic Bloom and drawn by Bob Montana. John Goldwater based the characters on the real people he met during his tours to the American Midwest.
Archie made his first appearance in Pep Comics in 1941 was drawn by Montana and later became a full fledged comic serial. The first issue of Archie Comics appeared in Winter 1942 and runs till date.
Archie is portrayed as a typical American redhead teenager, in love with the super rich and sometimes snobby Veronica and the girl next door Betty. The rivalry between Betty and Veronica for Archie’s attention, and Reggie’s attempts to foil Archie’s moves make interesting themes for most of the stories.
The supporting characters are played by Forstye alias Jughead, Archie’s best friend, Reggie, Archie’s rivals, Dilton Dalton, the school nerd, Moose, the school heavyweight and other characters. Much of the action centers around Riverdale High, their school, with Mr. Weatherbee, the Principal and a host of supporting faculty.
