Five are Together Again

Five are Together Again is the twenty-first story in the Famous Five saga. The siblings Julian, Dick and Anne, together with George come to Kirrin Island for their summer vacations as usual, but find Uncle Quentin and Aunt Fanny in quarantine and cannot let the children in.The gang of five decides to stay with Professor Hayling and Tinker at Big Hollow, a few miles away. The usual countryside jaunt takes place. Professor Haylin however cannot abide by the children’s noise and mischief, and the children decides to camp it out in the nearby fields, where a traveling circus pitches camp. Tinker and his monkey Mischief, who has appeared in an earlier adventure, makes reappearance as a supporting character.

The plot forms when Professor Hayling’s papers get stolen. After many suspicions, the culprit is the monkey in the circus.

Unlike other Famous Five books, the plot is hackneyed and the story and characterizations blunt. Enid Blyton does not seem to be in her elements. The use of imagery is still rife and so are the vivid descriptions of nature and events for which Enid Blyton uis famous for. This book happens to be the last Famous Five book written by Enid Blyton, though it was not intended to be the last.
