Five on a Treasure Island is the first book in the Famous Five series, featuring the gang of teenage adventurists – Joe, Dick, Anne, Goerghe and the dog Timothy. The siblings Jo, Dick and Anne land up in Kirran Bay to spend the summer vacations with their uncle Quentin and his daughter George and her dog Timothy.
The story starts with George’s disdain for her cousings until she finally reconciles and eventually becomes great friends.
George leads the gang to Kirrin Island that belongs to her mother, and here the adventure begins. The gang discovers an old wreck below the surface, and legends attribute gold inside the wreck. While they are in the island a storm lashes the wreck to the shores of the island. The exited children visit the island early next day to explore the wreck and finds tin crates inside the wreck. The bad guys now make an appearance for the contents of the tin boxes, which happen to be gold after all. The bad guys plans to buy the island from Uncle Quentin, but in the end the gang manages to overcome the bad guys and retain the gold after all.
Being the first book in the series, Enid Blyton has done a good job in introducing the characters. The plot may seem amateurish for a mature reader, but holds the excitement and realism of the teenage audience to whom Enid Blyton caters.
