“Master of the Game” is one of Sidney Sheldon’s popular novels, published in 1982. The book is a chronological novel, dealing with the story of the fictional MacGregor or Blackwell family spanning over six generations, focusing on the conversation of a small business into a large multinational giant.
James MacGregor went to seek his fortune in Klipdrift, South Africa but ended up defrauded by Solomon Van Der Merwe, a wealthy Dutch storekeeper, who steals his diamonds. Jamie, with a willing accomplice Banda plots his revenge against Van Der Merwe and succeeds in stealing a load of diamonds from his heavily guarded stores. James has not finished. Under disguise, she lures Van Der Merwe’s daughter, and strips her of her honor. A humiliated Van Der Merwe commits suicide. The rest of the novel deals with the twists and turns of Jamies relationship with van Der Merwe’s daughter and the handling of the business empire he inherits from him, and the subsequent trials and tribulations of his decedents, until Kate, the present incumbent.
The review of “Master of the Game” is mixed. While some critics consider the work as a compelling work of fiction that succeeds in engrossing the readers, others are not as charitable and consider is a string of loosely connected silly stories.
