The Sands of Time

“The Sands of Time” is Sidney Sheldon’s action novel published in 1988 and set in post civil war Spain, set in the background of the armed Basque struggle and the repressive post-Franco regime.

The story deals with the lives of four women in Spanish convent: Sister Teresa, Sister Lucia, Sister Graciela, and Sister Megan. All these four come from different backgrounds and have their different tale. They leave the convent and out of the convent and in the real world, they encounter encounters threat, violence, passions and even arrests, rape and death. The Nuns are attacked for giving shelter to a terrorist, and they fall in love with a guerrilla leader.

The plot complicates with two men pitted against each other, who are actually Basque freedom fighters. A New Yorker on the lookout for a missing heiress complicates the plot.

The lives of the different characters task different streams until Sidney Sheldon, in his characteristic storytelling style and using his literary skills unites these different tales into a single comprehensive plot.

The gripping narrative combined with the indepth characterization, heart rendering narratives on the personal pathos of the protagonists and the splendid work on the background settings establishes Sidney Sheldon as a master story teller.
