As a lover of historical fiction I was so pleased when I saw a copy of Michelle Moran’s Nefertiti sitting on the bookshelf at Borders. It seems to me that writers of historical fiction these days are obsessed with the Tudor theme and so it was refreshing to read something based in a different time and place.
Nefertiti is the story of the Queen told through the yes of her sister Mutnodjmet. The Prince kills his brother and takes Nefertiti as a wife. His current wife Kiya does not possess the same charm as Nefertiti and so Nefertiti becomes chief wife. The Pharoh begins to change the multiple god religion of the ancient Egyptians into one that worships the sun. This causes unhappy commoners and Nefertiti struggles as Kiya gives borth to sons while she only has daughters.
The story is captivating and it paints such a clear picture of ancient Egypt that you feel you are there with the characters.
I especially liked the fact that this was not told through the eyes of Nefertiti as the story being told by Mutnodjmet makes it fresh and unique.
This is a must read for lovers of historical fiction, especially those who are tired of reading about the Tudors.
