Books I Have Loved

THE OTHER HAND by CHRIS CLEAVE

This is a story about a likeable, if self-absorbed, UK magazine editor who goes on a short break with her husband to Nigeria. In one moment, on a remote beach – the sort she might use for a fashion shoot – her whole life changes. What happens is more awful than you can ever imagine, but this best seller is stunning as it follows the evolving friendship between the editor and a young Nigerian, Little Bee, whose fates collide on the beach.

STILL WATER CREEK by ALISON BOOTH

This is an evocative romantic drama. Its setting is in a sleepy Australian country town, the picture of complete innocence, except not everything is as it appears to be. This becomes apparent when a young widow, together with her daughter, moves there to start a new life and set off a chain of events which then exposes some simmering secrets.

BIRDIE’S BIG-GIRL SHOES by SUJEAN RIM

Girls aged five and above will adore the bright, candy colored illustrations and the story of Birdie, who loves wearing her mother’s fancy high heels. Before long, however, she finds freedom, liberation and joy in bare feet, sensible girl that she is.
